The right ASO metrics help you answer a more useful question than “Did our ranking go up?” They show where people discover the app, whether the listing earns intent, whether users install, and whether the promise attracts people who stay and create value.

There is no single ASO KPI that works for every app. Apple and Google also use different definitions for important funnel events. Apple’s App Store Analytics reports unique impressions, product-page views, downloads, and conversion rate; Google Play’s current store-listing reports emphasize unique install, open, and pre-registration clicks and click-through rate. A strong dashboard preserves those definitions instead of combining them into an ambiguous “conversion” number.

This guide builds an ASO metrics framework for weekly monitoring, release reviews, market comparisons, and experiments.

What ASO metrics measure: the funnel

Organize metrics by the question they answer:

Funnel stageMain questionExample KPIs
VisibilityAre relevant people seeing the app?Search visibility, impressions, listing visitors
ConsiderationAre they inspecting the product?Product-page views, page-view rate, listing clicks
ConversionAre they taking the store action?Downloads, install clicks, App Store conversion rate, Play CTR
QualityAre they becoming useful users?Activation, retention, trial start, subscription, revenue
FeedbackWhat should change next?Rating, review themes, support tickets, crash signals

Ranking is an input to visibility, not the final business outcome. A rank can change while impressions, traffic mix, conversion, or quality move in the opposite direction.

App Store metrics: what Apple actually defines

Apple’s Acquisition analytics describes a funnel that includes:

  • Unique Impressions: unique devices that viewed the app on the App Store.
  • Unique Product Page Views: unique devices that viewed the product page.
  • Total Downloads: total downloads, with first-time downloads and redownloads available as breakdowns.
  • Conversion Rate: how often unique impressions turn into total downloads, with pre-orders included according to Apple’s definition.

Apple lets teams filter acquisition data by source type and territory. This makes a useful diagnosis possible:

PatternLikely question
Impressions up, product-page views flatAre search results, category context, or the first asset earning a tap?
Product-page views up, downloads flatDoes the listing communicate value and trust?
Downloads up, retention downDid the message attract the wrong expectation?
Search traffic down, browse traffic upDid discovery behavior or metadata relevance change?

Apple also provides App Analytics metric definitions and Product Page Optimization reporting. Use the definitions for your reporting window; do not rely on a third-party dashboard that silently changes the denominator.

Google Play metrics: use CTR with the right denominator

Google’s current store-listing performance guidance says recent reports focus on user intent expressed through unique clicks. The main listing metrics include:

  • unique user Install Clicks;
  • unique user Open Clicks;
  • unique user Pre-registration Clicks;
  • Click-through Rate, defined as the percentage of store listing visitors who clicked a button.

Google says this reporting focus replaces the legacy conversion-rate framing for store listing performance. It also supports breakdowns such as traffic source, store listing, country, language, UTM source and campaign, and acquisition state.

That means a current Google Play report may answer “Did a visitor express install intent?” rather than “Did every person who saw an impression install?” This is not better or worse by itself; it is a different measurement question.

Metrics you should not compare directly

Avoid these shortcuts:

  • App Store conversion rate equals Google Play CTR.
  • A keyword rank equals organic downloads.
  • Impressions equal qualified visitors.
  • Install clicks equal retained users.
  • A higher top-line number equals a better experiment.

Apple defines App Store conversion rate using downloads and pre-orders divided by unique device impressions. Google’s listing CTR uses unique button clicks divided by store listing visitors. Put the formula and source next to every chart.

The five KPI layers for an ASO dashboard

1. Visibility KPIs

Track the number and quality of opportunities to be seen:

  • impressions by source, country, and language;
  • search visibility or keyword coverage by tracked term;
  • share of voice for a defined competitor set;
  • browse or explore exposure where the platform reports it.

Do not publish a “visibility score” without documenting its inputs. A score is useful for triage only when the team can reproduce it.

2. Consideration KPIs

Measure whether the store surface earns a deeper look:

  • unique product-page views on the App Store;
  • listing visitors on Google Play;
  • page-view rate where the platform’s denominator is known;
  • external campaign landings and referral quality;
  • custom product page or custom store listing traffic.

Consideration is where the icon, first screenshot, title, subtitle or short description, and search context meet. A visibility increase with no consideration increase deserves investigation before celebration.

3. Conversion KPIs

Use platform-native terms:

  • App Store downloads and Apple’s conversion rate;
  • Google Play install clicks and CTR;
  • first-time downloads versus redownloads;
  • trial starts or first core action after install.

For your own internal reporting, document the formula. For example:

App Store CVR = (total downloads + pre-orders included by the report) / unique device impressions

Google Play listing CTR = unique button clicks / store listing visitors

Keep the raw numerator and denominator so another person can audit the chart.

4. Quality and business KPIs

ASO should attract the right user, not just the easiest click. Track:

  • activation or first-value event;
  • day 1, day 7, and day 30 retention when volume supports it;
  • trial start and trial-to-paid conversion;
  • subscription starts, renewal, and churn;
  • revenue or proceeds by acquisition source;
  • refunds and support contacts.

These are not all ASO metrics in the narrow store sense. They are guardrails that show whether the listing promise matches the product.

5. Feedback and health KPIs

Review:

  • rating trend by territory;
  • recent review volume and recurring themes;
  • response time and resolution rate;
  • crash-free sessions, app launch issues, and support friction;
  • update cadence and feature adoption.

If a conversion improvement is followed by a spike in “not what I expected” reviews, the listing may be overselling the product.

A weekly ASO metrics review

Use the same order every week:

1. Confirm the window

Compare the same number of days, with the same markets, source definitions, release state, and major campaigns. Note holidays, launches, outages, and price changes.

2. Read the funnel from top to bottom

Start with visibility, move to consideration, then conversion and quality. A lower-stage decline may be caused by an upper-stage mix change.

3. Segment before explaining

Break down by store, country, language, source, device, app version, and product page when the platform supports it. A blended average is a clue, not an explanation.

4. Link movement to a dated change

Mark metadata releases, screenshot updates, experiments, product bugs, pricing changes, and campaigns on the chart. Do not assign causality just because two dates are close.

5. Choose one next action

End the meeting with one owner, one hypothesis, one primary metric, one guardrail, and one review date. Five simultaneous “next steps” are usually five unmeasured changes.

How to measure an ASO experiment

Use a control wherever the platform supports it. Before starting:

  1. Save the current asset and metadata.
  2. Choose the audience, market, and source.
  3. Define the primary metric and a quality guardrail.
  4. Change one meaningful variable.
  5. Decide how long the test needs to collect useful data.
  6. Record the result and what you will do next.

Apple’s Product Page Optimization reporting shows conversion rate, relative improvement, and confidence for treatments. Google’s Store Listing Experiments guidance recommends one asset at a time and at least a week. Follow the platform’s own methodology; do not import an unverified confidence rule from a blog post.

Diagnose common ASO metric patterns

Impressions are up, but downloads are down

Check whether the new impressions come from a broader or less qualified query set. Review product-page views, source mix, title, icon, first screenshot, and rating. More visibility can lower the blended conversion rate if the audience changes.

Product-page views are up, but conversion is flat

The listing is earning attention but not enough trust or clarity. Test the first screenshot, value proposition, subtitle, preview opening, or localized message. Keep the keyword change separate from the conversion test where possible.

Conversion is up, but retention is down

Inspect expectation mismatch. The listing may be promising a feature, audience, price, or workflow that the first session does not deliver. Read recent reviews and support tickets before making another creative change.

Ranking is up, but revenue is flat

Check keyword intent, country mix, subscription eligibility, trial behavior, and downstream source attribution. Position alone does not establish business value.

One market is weak while the global average looks healthy

Open the locale. Review translation quality, local keyword demand, screenshot context, currency, support, and product availability. Averages are especially dangerous for bilingual products.

ASO metrics FAQ

What is the most important ASO metric?

There is no universal winner. For a discovery problem, visibility and product-page views matter; for a conversion problem, the store’s conversion metric matters; for a business decision, quality and revenue guardrails matter. Choose the metric that matches the current bottleneck.

Should I track keyword rankings every day?

Track at a cadence that matches your traffic and decision cycle. Daily rank checks can show volatility, but a stable time window and downstream store behavior are more useful for release decisions.

Is organic download growth the same as ASO success?

Not necessarily. Organic downloads can move because of seasonality, brand activity, featuring, paid campaigns, product changes, or reporting changes. Attribute carefully and document the other inputs.

How do I compare App Store and Google Play?

Compare the funnel conceptually — visibility, consideration, conversion, and quality — while keeping each platform’s metric definitions separate. Use the App Store versus Google Play guide for field and workflow differences.
